Amalfi Cathedral Steps

The steps of Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Sant'Andrea) give one of the most striking architectural frames in Campania, Italy. From the Piazza del Duomo a broad flight of 62 steps climbs to the cathedral's Arab-Norman facade, a band of pointed arches, striped masonry and glittering golden mosaic, with the medieval bell tower rising to one side. The composition stacks the staircase as a leading line straight up to the decorated front, and the narrow piazza lets a photographer set up low at the base to exaggerate the climb. The facade faces broadly southwest down toward the sea, so it falls into shadow early and catches its best direct light through the morning and toward midday, when the mosaic and the striped arches glow; late afternoon backlights the front and flattens the detail. Soft, even morning light before the sun swings fully onto the facade also works well and avoids harsh contrast on the patterned stone. Getting the staircase clear of people is the central challenge: the piazza is one of Amalfi's busiest spaces, and from mid-morning the steps fill with visitors and wedding parties. Arriving before about 9am gives the cleanest frame and softer light. Spring and autumn bring comfortable light and thinner crowds; summer is crowded and contrasty. The piazza and steps are free public space with no fee to photograph the exterior, though entry to the cathedral and its Cloister of Paradise carries a small ticket of a few euros. Tripods are tolerated on the open piazza when it is quiet but become impractical in crowds, and drones are restricted over the dense town centre. The viewpoint at the foot of the steps needs no hike and is reached on level ground from the seafront, though the climb to the cathedral itself is all stairs.
