AIG Mergellina Hostel

AIG Mergellina Hostel is a hostel at Salita della Grotta 23 in the Mergellina and Posillipo area of Naples, Campania, close to Mergellina railway and metro station and the hydrofoil port. The Salita della Grotta runs up from the Piedigrotta district near the entrance to the Crypta Neapolitana, the ancient Roman tunnel, and the area is also associated with the Virgil's Tomb park and the Piedigrotta church. Mergellina station on Metro Line 2 and the suburban railway connects directly to Napoli Centrale, Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei, while the harbour offers hydrofoil and ferry departures to Capri, Ischia and Procida. The Lungomare and the seafront promenade toward Chiaia and Castel dell'Ovo begin a few minutes away, with views of the bay and Vesuvius, and the Villa Comunale gardens are a fifteen-minute walk. The hostel provides dorm beds and private rooms, a lounge, wifi and luggage storage, aimed at backpackers, solo travellers and budget-minded visitors who prefer a quieter district to the old town. There is no restaurant or spa, but the Mergellina harbour area is lined with seafood restaurants, pizzerias and the famous gelaterie, bars and pastry shops that make the neighbourhood popular with locals on weekends. The atmosphere is relaxed and residential compared with the city centre, with evening strolls along the water a draw. Staff can advise on ferries, Pompeii and Herculaneum trips and the best local food. Prices typically fall between €20 and €60 per night depending on room type and season, with dorm beds at the lower end. Posillipo hill rises behind, with panoramic viewpoints and parks, and local buses and the metro provide links to the centre in around fifteen to twenty minutes. The area gets busy on summer evenings and weekends near the harbour, but side streets are calm.
