Naples' grand semicircular square framed by the colonnade of San Francesco di Paola and the Royal Palace.
Piazza del Plebiscito is the grand public square of Naples, in the Santa Lucia district of Campania, Italy. It is a pedestrian space open around the clock and free to enter. One side is closed by the semicircular colonnade of the church of San Francesco di Paola, whose neoclassical dome recalls the Pantheon in Rome, and the opposite side is defined by the long facade of the Palazzo Reale.
The square is wide and mostly open, which makes it one of the few places in the historic centre where visitors can see a large building ensemble at once. Equestrian statues stand in front of the church, and the Royal Palace, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Galleria Umberto I and Castel Nuovo are all within a short walk. The square is also used for concerts and public events, so access to parts of it is sometimes restricted.
A visit takes about 30 minutes for the square alone, though many visitors stop longer for photographs or to pair it with the palace and theatre. Early morning is calm, with soft light on the palace facade and few people. Sunset gives warm light on the colonnade and the dome, and the square fills with locals and visitors in the evening. The best photo angles are from the centre of the square toward the dome and from under the colonnade looking toward the palace.
The nearest station is Municipio on Metro Line 1, about an eight-minute walk away. The square lies on the edge of the pedestrian area linking Via Toledo with the waterfront, so a walk toward Santa Lucia and the Lungomare is a natural continuation. There is little shade, so midsummer midday visits can be hot.
