Reggio Calabria Waterfront (Lungomare)

The Lungomare of Reggio Calabria is a seafront promenade stretching approximately 3 kilometres along the shore of the Strait of Messina in central Reggio Calabria, the capital of Reggio Calabria Province and the largest city in Calabria. Praised by Gabriele D'Annunzio as the 'most beautiful kilometre in Italy', the Lungomare runs from the port area in the south along Via Giulia and Viale Giacomo Matteotti, lined with lemon trees, tropical palms, flowering oleanders, and a continuous series of benches and viewpoints facing the Strait. The view across the Strait is one of the most remarkable in southern Italy: on clear days — and the strait air is often exceptionally transparent — the Sicilian coast and the city of Messina are visible as clearly as a city map, with Mount Etna rising behind to a height of 3,357 metres, its summit frequently snow-capped even in early summer, and plumes of volcanic steam visible from the promenade benches on active days. The mirage phenomenon known as Fata Morgana — optical mirages caused by temperature inversion above the Strait — is occasionally visible from the Lungomare, particularly in calm morning conditions, generating the illusion of suspended cities or inverted coastal landscapes above the water surface. The promenade is used continually by Reggio residents for the passeggiata, morning jogging, and evening socialising; it functions as the city's primary public outdoor space. The southern end connects to the port ferry terminal for crossings to Sicily. The Lungomare is five minutes' walk from Reggio Calabria Centrale railway station and directly adjacent to the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, making it a natural complement to a museum visit.
