Gerace

Gerace is a medieval hilltop town in the Locride area of Reggio Calabria Province, Calabria, perched at approximately 500 metres above the Ionian coastal plain on a rocky limestone spur that made it virtually impregnable to medieval attack. Founded in the 10th century by coastal inhabitants of ancient Locri fleeing Arab and Saracen raids, Gerace grew quickly under Byzantine governance and later flourished under Norman rule into a substantial ecclesiastical and administrative centre. The town's most prominent monument is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta at the highest point of the historic centre, built under the Normans in the 11th century and expanded in the 13th — it is the largest medieval church in Calabria, measuring approximately 60 metres in length, with three naves supported by 26 antique granite and cipollino marble columns taken from the ruins of ancient Locri below. The columns vary slightly in diameter and height, evidence of their salvaged origin, and collectively create a forest of stone remarkable in its variety of ancient material. The crypt beneath the high altar is entirely Norman, with low carved capitals and barrel vaults. Beyond the cathedral, Gerace contains several other medieval churches — San Francesco d'Assisi, Santa Maria dei Poveri, the Aragonese church of San Giovanni — in various states of preservation, and the lanes of the upper town pass crumbling palazzo facades and stone archways that frame views across the olive groves to the Ionian horizon. The Norman castle at the summit of the spur adds a further layer of fortified history, though the interior access is limited. A morning in Gerace — moving from the cathedral crypt upward to the castle view and back through the lane network — is a consistently rewarding experience.
