Horseback riding in the Aspromonte National Park takes visitors into the rugged mountain heart of Calabria's far south, where forested ridges fall away toward the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas and, on clear days, the cone of Mount Etna rises across the Strait of Messina. Riding is based near Gambarie d'Aspromonte, in the municipality of Santo Stefano in Aspromonte, around 1,300 metres above sea level. Trails wind through beech and silver-fir forest, past mountain springs and along old pastoral paths used by shepherds, with rides ranging from two-hour introductions to half-day treks covering 10 to 30 km. The activity is rated easy: gentle, well-trained horses and slow-paced guided rides make it accessible to beginners and families, with the guide matching mounts and routes to each rider's experience, though longer treks reward those with a little saddle time. A minimum age usually applies for children, who may ride a led pony or share a gentle horse. The operator, Centro Ippico Aspromonte (Via Gambarie 4, Santo Stefano in Aspromonte), provides helmets and riding boots, and recommends long trousers; riders bring their own layers, sun protection and water. A short briefing before mounting covers handling the horse, the trail plan and what to do if a rider needs to dismount, with the guide leading the group at a controlled pace and carrying a phone and first-aid kit for the more remote forest sections. Indicative prices are around 50 euro per person (roughly 54 dollars) for a two-hour guided ride and 90 euro (roughly 97 dollars) for a half-day trail. The season runs April to October, with late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) the most pleasant, as the high forest stays cool while the coast swelters; midsummer rides are best taken in the cooler morning hours.
