Gole del Raganello Canyoning

The Gole del Raganello is a dramatic limestone canyon carved through the southern flank of the Pollino National Park near the Arbereshe village of Civita, in Calabria's Cosenza province. Canyoning here combines wading, swimming, boulder-scrambling and short jumps and slides through cold, clear pools hemmed in by towering rock walls that narrow to just a few metres in the celebrated section beneath the Ponte del Diavolo, the 'Bridge of the Devil'. The full-day descent covers a 5 to 10 km gorge section and takes roughly seven to eight hours including transfers, the safety briefing and a riverside break. It is rated hard: participants need good general fitness, confidence in water and the ability to swim, as the route involves continuous movement over slippery rock and repeated immersions in water that stays cool even in midsummer. A minimum age of around 14 typically applies, and harness fit sets practical height and weight limits. The operator, Pollino Adventures (Via Roma 3, Morano Calabro), provides wetsuit, helmet and harness; participants bring sturdy water shoes, swimwear and a change of dry clothes. Guides are qualified canyoning instructors who deliver a briefing covering technique, hand signals and the evacuation plan before entry. Because the gorge has limited exit points, groups stay together and weather is monitored closely, as the catchment is prone to flash flooding after rain. The recommended season runs May to September, with June to August offering the warmest water and most stable flows; descents are cancelled when upstream rainfall raises the risk of a sudden surge. The canyon was the site of a fatal flash flood in 2018, and reputable operators now follow strict hydrological monitoring, so booking through a certified guide rather than entering independently is essential. The scenery is exceptional, with the stone arch of the Ponte del Diavolo high overhead and the Albanian-Calabrian heritage of Civita adding cultural depth to the day. The Pollino remains one of southern Italy's wildest landscapes, and the Raganello gorge is its signature adventure.
