Varenna (Lake Como)

Varenna is a small lakeside village on the eastern shore of Lake Como in Lombardy, positioned at the junction of the lake's two southern arms — directly across from Bellagio and a short ferry crossing from Menaggio — making it one of the most strategically connected and yet peaceful bases on the lake. Unlike Bellagio, which has become a busy day-trip destination heavily oriented toward tourism, Varenna retains the character of a genuine village: narrow lanes (some carved directly from the cliff face), a small fishing harbour, and a lakefront promenade called the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Walk) that clings to the rock above the water's edge. Villa Monastero, originally a 12th-century Cistercian monastery that was converted into a lakeside residence in the 17th century, has gardens extending 2 kilometres along the shoreline with rare botanical specimens and lake-level terraces offering extraordinary views. Villa Cipressi, adjacent to Villa Monastero, has similarly beautiful gardens open to the public. The medieval Castello di Vezio, perched above the village on a rocky crag, requires a 20-minute uphill walk from the village and provides the most elevated view of Varenna, Bellagio, and the surrounding Alpine peaks. The village is served by its own train station (Varenna-Esino) with regular direct connections to Milan Centrale (1 hour), making it the most practical lake base for visitors using public transport. The car ferry from Varenna to Menaggio is also the primary lake crossing point, maintaining its role as a transport hub.
