Procida Island

Procida is the smallest of the three main islands in the Bay of Naples — at 3.7 square kilometres — and the least visited, yet it offers an intensity of colour, character, and local life that Capri and Ischia have largely traded away for tourism. The island is a working fishing community where pastel-painted houses in lemon-yellow, faded terracotta, and powder blue rise directly from the water's edge at the Marina Corricella harbour, a crescent of colour that UNESCO recognised when it made Procida Italy's Capital of Culture for 2022. The Marina Corricella, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, was the primary filming location for the 1994 film 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' (1999 film) and is widely considered one of the most beautifully coloured harbours in the Mediterranean. The island has no major monuments or museums — it is experienced by walking its narrow lanes, eating at the waterfront restaurants, and swimming at the beaches of Chiaiolella and Pozzo Vecchio. The Terra Murata, the fortified medieval settlement at the island's highest point (90 metres), contains the abbey church of San Michele Arcangelo and provides views over the entire Bay of Naples. Procida is reached by hydrofoil (35 minutes) or ferry (1 hour) from Naples Molo Beverello, or by ferry from Pozzuoli. Unlike Capri, there is no cable car or tourist infrastructure — the island's character derives precisely from what it has not developed.
