Maison Forte d'Introd

Maison Forte d'Introd is a fortified noble house in the village of Introd, positioned on the SR47 road between Aosta and Cogne at the entrance to the Gran Paradiso valley. The building represents a characteristic type of Valdostana architecture — the maison forte or fortified manor — midway between a true military castle and a domestic residence. Constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Introd example retains its original square tower, defensive walls, and a residential block that was used by the noble families controlling access to the Cogne valley. The interior preserves period structural elements including vaulted stone ceilings, carved window surrounds, and sections of original fresco painting on the walls. The building was restored in the late 20th century and is now in the care of the Aosta Valley regional heritage system. Unlike the larger regional castles, Maison Forte d'Introd is open only on weekends from April to October, with guided tours as the sole access method — independent visits are not offered. Groups of visitors are taken through the principal rooms by a regional guide. The setting in the village of Introd itself is picturesque, with stone houses and mountain views characteristic of the middle Aosta Valley. The building is a convenient stop on the drive between Aosta and Cogne, adding a cultural element to a day in Gran Paradiso National Park.
