Lago Blu (Blue Lake) near Cervinia

Lago Blu (Blue Lake) is a small alpine lake at approximately 2,000 metres altitude, sitting on a natural terrace within walking distance of the Breuil-Cervinia resort village in the Aosta Valley. The lake takes its name from the intense blue-green colour of its water, fed by snowmelt and glacier runoff from the Matterhorn massif above. In calm morning conditions the lake surface mirrors the Matterhorn's pyramidal profile, creating one of the most photographed alpine reflections in Italy. The walk from the centre of Breuil-Cervinia to Lago Blu takes approximately 30 minutes on a signed trail, gaining about 100 metres in altitude over a gentle path through alpine meadows and scattered larch trees. The lake itself is surrounded by low-lying alpine vegetation including rhododendrons, which bloom in shades of pink and purple in late June and July, adding colour to the foreground of the Matterhorn reflection. A small wooden shelter near the lake provides a rest point. The trail continues above the lake for those wishing to extend the walk toward the Plan Maison cable car intermediate station. The best conditions for the mirror reflection occur on windless mornings from July to early September; afternoon winds typically disturb the surface. The site is freely accessible and requires no guide or special preparation beyond appropriate footwear for the mountain trail.
