Connemara National Park

Connemara National Park near Letterfrack in County Galway protects a wild stretch of mountain, blanket bog, heath, and grassland beneath the Twelve Bens mountain range. The park's best-known trail climbs Diamond Hill, a three-to-four-hour round trip on a mix of boardwalk and stone steps leading to panoramic views over Connemara's mountains and out to the Atlantic coastline. The visitor center at the park entrance covers the region's ecology, including its blanket bog formation and the Connemara pony, a native breed still grazing on the surrounding hills, and offers an easier option for those not tackling the full Diamond Hill climb. Weather changes quickly in this exposed mountain landscape, and visitors should carry waterproof layers even on days that start clear, since conditions on the upper slopes can differ sharply from the valley floor. A half day covers the visitor center and a shorter loop trail, while the full Diamond Hill ascent takes most of a day when combined with the drive from Galway city. Kylemore Abbey lies a short distance from the park entrance and is commonly combined with a Connemara visit. Early starts help beat both the unpredictable afternoon weather and the midday crowds on the Diamond Hill trailhead in summer.
