Clonmacnoise Monastic Site

Clonmacnoise, founded by St. Ciarán in 544 AD on a bend of the River Shannon in County Offaly, grew into one of early medieval Ireland's most important centers of learning and pilgrimage, and its extensive ruins reflect that former scale. The site includes a cathedral, the largest of its churches, seven smaller churches built over several centuries, two round towers, and a collection of high crosses whose carved biblical scenes remain among the finest examples of early Christian Irish art. The original high crosses and a selection of the site's inscribed grave slabs, over 200 of which survive, are displayed indoors in the visitor center to protect them from weathering, with faithful replicas standing in their original outdoor positions. The visitor center's audiovisual presentation gives context on the site's history before visitors walk the grounds. A visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The setting beside the Shannon is especially atmospheric at sunset, when the ruins and round towers are silhouetted against the river, and river cruises from nearby Athlone occasionally stop at the site, adding a different way to arrive. The remote, rural location keeps visitor numbers lower than Ireland's most famous heritage sites even in summer.
