Mount Batur is an active volcano of 1,717 metres rising inside an ancient caldera at Kintamani in Bangli regency, about 60 km north of Denpasar. Most visitors climb it for sunrise, with guided groups collected from their hotel around 1:30 to 2:30 in the morning for a drive of roughly 1.5 hours to the Toya Bungkah or Pasar Agung trailhead. The ascent takes about 2 hours in the dark by headlamp, and a local guide is generally required at the main trailheads. At the summit, visitors watch the sun rise over Mount Agung and Lake Batur, and guides often steam eggs and bananas over volcanic vents for breakfast. Macaques live near the top and can be bold around food. The descent takes about 1.5 hours and the full trek is around 4 to 5 hours. This is a strenuous pre-dawn trip, so it suits reasonably fit travellers, and the final stretch involves loose volcanic gravel. Operators typically include transfers, guide, torch and breakfast, with options to add a hot spring soak at Toya Devasya on Lake Batur or a coffee plantation stop on the return. Visitors who prefer to avoid the climb can instead drive to the Penelokan viewpoint on the crater rim in the daytime, and eat at one of the restaurants along the rim with views of the lake. Dry season, from April to October, offers the clearest sunrises, while in the wet months cloud, rain and slippery trails are common. Warm layers are needed at the summit, where temperatures are cold before dawn, and sturdy shoes with grip are essential. Trekking is not recommended in heavy rain, and the volcano can be closed during periods of increased activity.
