Pedestrian square with Tibetan curios, woollens, tea and Himalayan crafts
Chowrasta and the shops of The Mall form the social and shopping heart of Darjeeling, a hill town in northern West Bengal at roughly 2,000 metres. Chowrasta is a small, pedestrianised square at the top of the Mall, with benches, views toward Observatory Hill and, on clear days, the Kanchenjunga range, and it is ringed by shops, bookstores, cafes and a few vendors. The Mall Road and nearby lanes add rows of small shops. Goods are shaped by the hill setting and Tibetan, Nepali and Bengali influences: Tibetan curios such as prayer wheels, singing bowls, thangka paintings and silver jewellery, woollens including shawls, sweaters and caps, Darjeeling tea, handmade paper, wooden masks, Himalayan crafts and bookstores selling regional titles. Many items are brought in from elsewhere, and a good proportion of the metalwork and jewellery is machine-made rather than antique, so genuine hand-made pieces require checking and are priced accordingly. Tea shops offer more reliable stock than general stalls, while woollens vary between wool, acrylic blends and imports. Bargaining is customary in curio shops and with street vendors, with reductions of twenty to forty per cent possible, but fixed prices apply in bookstores and established tea shops. Cash is common, with cards and UPI accepted by larger shops, and tax-refund schemes are not generally available. Atmosphere is relaxed and strollable: no vehicles enter the square, crowds peak in the evenings and in the tourist seasons of April to June and October to November, and mist or rain can empty the shops in the monsoon. Food options are plentiful, from tea rooms and bakeries to momo and thukpa stalls, and restaurants along the Mall serve Tibetan, Nepali, Indian and Continental dishes. Layout is easy, with the Mall running downhill from Chowrasta and side steps leading to Laden La Road and Nehru Road, where more shops are found. Short evening walks are common, with shops generally open until the early evening and sunset times varying by season.
