Tiger Hill Sunrise over Kangchenjunga

  • LightingSide light on snow summits at sunrise; pre-dawn blue hour for the horizon colour gradient.
  • Best seasonOctober-December and March-April

Tiger Hill, near Ghum in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, is the region's best-known sunrise viewpoint. The hilltop observation platform faces north and north-east, so the frame is built from the Kangchenjunga massif across the full width of the horizon, with layered ridges and valley mist in the foreground. On exceptionally clear mornings the distant tip of Mount Everest can be picked out with a telephoto lens, though it is small and easily lost in haze.

The viewing platform faces Kangchenjunga and, on exceptionally clear days, Mount Everest, with the first light turning the peaks gold.

Light arrives in stages: a blue pre-dawn glow, a pink band along the horizon, then first sun striking the highest summits gold while the valleys stay in shadow. The sun rises behind the photographer's right shoulder relative to the peaks, so the summits are lit from the side, which gives strong relief on snow faces. The best season runs from October to December and again in March and April, when post-monsoon air is clearest; June to September is mostly cloud and rain, and winter mornings are very cold. The viewpoint is among the busiest in the district and fills well before sunrise with jeep-borne visitors. Visitors who arrive 45 to 60 minutes before first light can claim a spot at the railing or on the upper terrace; those who arrive late shoot over the heads of others. Tripod legs are usually tolerated at the railing but space is tight, so a compact tripod and early arrival matter more than gear size. Drone use near the viewpoint is restricted in practice and should not be assumed legal; check with local authorities before flying. Access normally involves a pre-dawn jeep transfer from Darjeeling and a short climb of steps from the parking area. Entry or vehicle fees, where charged, are modest and should be confirmed locally. Clear days are never guaranteed, so a second morning is a sensible plan.

Tips for visiting

  • Arrive 45-60 minutes before sunrise to secure a railing position.
  • A 70-200mm lens isolates the summits; a wide lens captures the whole horizon and colour gradient.
  • Bracket exposures: the sky is bright while the valleys stay dark, so consider a graduated ND filter.
  • Carry spare batteries and warm layers, as cold drains batteries quickly.
  • October and November offer the best odds of clear air.

When to visit

Sunrise from October to December and March to April, arriving before first light. Clear weekday mornings are noticeably less crowded.
