At low tide the sea recedes far, exposing a broad flat where red crabs scurry across the sand, one of the beach's best-known sights.

The beach is open and breezy, with moderate surf and no sheltered cove. Compared with Digha it is far less commercial, with fewer crowds and a scenic, unhurried atmosphere that suits couples, families and photographers. It is popular with weekenders from Kolkata, so Saturdays and Sundays are busier than weekdays. It is not a surf or party beach. Swimming should be cautious and limited to shallow water, as currents can be strong and formal lifeguard coverage is not documented.

Facilities are growing but remain modest. Several resorts operate near the shore, local stalls sell seafood and snacks, and parking is available. Public restrooms and changing rooms are limited, so most visitors rely on their resort. Because the area is less developed, visitors should carry water, sun protection and cash, and plan meals in advance when staying outside the resorts.

Access is by road. Buses and cars follow the Kolkata to Digha route, which takes about four hours, and a local taxi covers the final stretch to the beach. Tajpur is often visited together with Mandarmani or Shankarpur, and it works well as a weekend base rather than a day trip from Kolkata. The best time to visit is October to March, when the weather is cooler and drier and the casuarina groves and red crabs are most pleasant to explore.
