Cluster of 17th- and 18th-century Malla-dynasty brick and terracotta temples including Rasmancha, Shyam Rai and Jor Bangla.
Bishnupur in Bankura district, West Bengal, India, was the capital of the Malla dynasty, who ruled from the 17th to the 18th century and built a group of brick and terracotta temples that form one of the finest examples of Bengali temple art. The main cluster lies around Rasmancha Road. Rasmancha, a pyramidal brick structure with arched galleries, was used to display Krishna images during the Ras festival. Shyam Rai is a five-pinnacled temple covered with terracotta panels showing scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and Krishna's life. Jor Bangla pairs two hut-shaped roofs into a single shrine, while other temples such as Madan Mohan and Radha Shyam show different styles. The terracotta carving, with soldiers, dancers, animals and floral borders, gives each wall the look of a sculpted storybook. A visit takes three to four hours, since the temples are spread across the town and are best reached by cycle rickshaw. Besides the temples, visitors can see the Dalmadal cannon, old lakes called Lalbandh, and shops selling Baluchari silk saris and terracotta horses. The sites are open from about 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with an entry fee of approximately INR 25 for Indian nationals and about INR 500 for foreign visitors at the main ticketed temples. Winter, from November to February, is the most comfortable time, while summers are hot and the monsoon makes lanes muddy. Weekdays are quiet, while weekends and the Bishnupur Mela in December bring crowds. Trains from Howrah and Santragachi reach Bishnupur in about three to four hours, making a day trip possible.
