Tamil Nadu History & Heritage Guide 2025

Journey through the fascinating history and heritage sites of Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu is a southern Indian state renowned for its Dravidian temples, classical dance, and rich cultural heritage spanning over 2,000 years. From the ancient Chola temples of Thanjavur to the pristine beaches of Kanyakumari, the state offers an unparalleled blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

Tamil Nadu is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited regions, with a documented history spanning over 3,000 years and Tamil being one of the world's oldest surviving classical languages. The region was home to the powerful Sangam age Tamil kingdoms (Chera, Chola, Pandya) from around 300 BCE, followed by the Pallava dynasty who created the magnificent rock-cut monuments at Mahabalipuram. The Chola Empire (9th-13th centuries) reached its zenith under Rajaraja Chola I and his son Rajendra Chola, building grand temples across South and Southeast Asia. Colonial history includes Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British presence, with Fort St. George in Chennai (1644) being Britain's first Indian fortification.
