The Shekhawati region in northern Rajasthan is known as the world's largest open-air art gallery, with hundreds of 19th-century merchant mansions (havelis) decorated with elaborate frescoes depicting mythology, folk tales, trains, cars, and colonial-era scenes. The town of Mandawa is the best base for exploring these painted havelis, many of which are slowly being restored.
