Dhamma Pattana is the residential Vipassana meditation centre attached to the Global Vipassana Pagoda at Gorai, on the far north-western edge of Mumbai beyond Borivali, reached by road to the Gorai jetty and then a short ferry across the creek. The golden dome of the pagoda, completed in 2008 and built without internal supporting pillars, is the landmark, and the meditation centre sits within the same campus overlooking the water. Courses follow the technique taught by S. N. Goenka in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. The standard programme is ten days residential, during which students observe noble silence, rise before dawn, meditate for roughly ten hours a day in a mix of group sittings and individual practice, and take a simple vegetarian diet with no evening meal for new students. Phones, books, writing materials and outside contact are surrendered for the duration. Shorter one-day and three-day courses are offered to students who have already completed a ten-day course. Nothing is charged. Courses run entirely on donation from those who have completed a course and wish to allow others to attend, and the centre is explicit that no payment is accepted from first-time students. Accommodation is single-occupancy with attached facilities, which is a notable comfort compared with many centres in the tradition. Applications open online and close well in advance, and demand for the Mumbai centre is high, so booking two to three months ahead is realistic. Day visitors who are not enrolled on a course can still visit the Global Vipassana Pagoda itself, which is free, open daily except Mondays, and includes a twenty-minute introductory meditation session in the main dome.
