Matheran Plateau Walk from Dasturi Naka

The Matheran Plateau Walk begins at the Dasturi Naka car park, the vehicle-free hill station's entry point about 110 km southeast of Mumbai in Raigad District, reached by a Central Line train to Neral Junction followed by a shared taxi up the ghat road to Dasturi; from there the narrow-gauge toy train also runs to Matheran town when in service, though it is suspended for safety during the monsoon, typically from mid-June to mid-October. From Dasturi Naka it is about 3 km on foot, by horse, or by hand-pulled rickshaw into the Matheran bazaar, climbing roughly 200-300 m onto the laterite plateau at about 800 m elevation; walkers who want to link the town's many viewpoints, such as Panorama Point, Louisa Point, and Echo Point, can expect 8-12 km of additional walking over a full day. The paths are red laterite soil, which turns to soft, staining mud in the monsoon and is loose and dusty in the dry season, with light shade from the surrounding forest along most viewpoint trails and open, sunny stretches at the cliff-edge lookouts themselves. There are no motor vehicles anywhere on the plateau, so all routes are shared with horses and hand-pulled rickshaws, and hikers should watch footing accordingly. Food stalls, tea shops and hotels cluster in the bazaar, making the town itself a natural base and water-refill point between viewpoint walks, while the outlying points have no facilities, so hikers carry water for longer loops. The cliff-edge viewpoints on the plateau's rim make sensible turn-around points, and hikers unfamiliar with the network of paths should ask locally for directions, since junctions are not always signed.
