A large golden domed pagoda built for meditation, housing what is claimed to be the world's largest hollow stone dome without pillar support.
The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a large golden-domed meditation hall built on reclaimed land near Gorai in northern Mumbai, inaugurated in 2009. The structure is modeled on Myanmar's Shwedagon Pagoda and is said to house the largest hollow stone dome in the world built without any supporting pillars, with a diameter of about 85 metres. Inside, the main hall can seat around 8,000 people for silent Vipassana meditation sessions. The complex also houses relics of the Buddha, a museum on the life of the Buddha and the spread of Vipassana meditation, and gardens surrounding the pagoda. The site can be reached by a scenic ferry ride across Gorai Creek.
