Scuba Diving and Parasailing on the Alibaug Coast

Alibaug, across the harbour from Mumbai in Raigad District, is the base for a cluster of beach water-sports activities spread across Nagaon, Varsoli and Kashid beaches, most commonly reached by a roughly one-hour catamaran or ro-ro ferry from the Gateway of India or Bhaucha Dhakka to Mandwa, followed by about 20 km by road. Parasailing at Nagaon and nearby beaches needs no swimming ability or prior experience, since participants are strapped into a harness and towed aloft behind a speedboat for a five-to-ten-minute flight, making it accessible to most visitors, though operators generally set a minimum and maximum weight. Discovery scuba diving off the Murud-Janjira coast is a different level of activity: sessions run two to three hours including a briefing and equipment fitting, followed by a shallow, instructor-accompanied dive, and while no certification is required for a discovery dive, participants should be reasonably comfortable in water and able to equalise ear pressure, with basic swimming ability generally expected. Full scuba equipment, including tank, regulator, mask and fins, is provided by the dive centre, while parasailing harnesses and life jackets are supplied by the beach operators. The water-sports stalls along Nagaon and Varsoli beaches are informal, small-scale operations, and quality varies, so checking that harnesses and life jackets look well maintained and that a safety boat is nearby is worth doing before paying; discovery dive operators along this coast are generally smaller outfits rather than large certified dive schools, so confirming instructor qualifications before booking is sensible. A safety briefing precedes both activities, covering harness checks and hand signals for parasailing, and mask-clearing and hand signals underwater for the discovery dive. The best season runs from November to March, when the Arabian Sea along this stretch is calmest and underwater visibility for diving is at its best; conditions deteriorate through the June-to-September monsoon, when most operators suspend both parasailing and diving.
