The most important pilgrimage site for the Varkari sect, Pandharpur's Vitthal (Vithoba) Temple is a sacred shrine on the banks of the Bhima River that draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims during the Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi festivals. The central deity Vitthal, a form of Vishnu, is unique to Maharashtra.
