A lush biodiversity hotspot in the Western Ghats, Bhimashankar is home to the giant Indian squirrel and is the source of the Bhima River. The sanctuary also contains the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple, one of the 12 sacred Shiva shrines, making it significant both spiritually and ecologically.
