Kerala, known as 'God's Own Country,' is a lush tropical state on India's southwest Malabar Coast, celebrated for its serene backwaters, verdant tea plantations, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. It is one of the most literate and developed states in India, offering a unique blend of Ayurvedic traditions, diverse wildlife, and vibrant festivals.

Top beaches

A ranked editor’s shortlist of the coastline worth planning a day around in Kerala.

  1. Kovalam Beach

Kerala's most developed beach resort, comprising three crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky headlands. Lighthouse Beach is the largest and most popular, with a lively strip of restaurants, shops, and Ayurvedic centers. The lighthouse at the southern end is a landmark.

Best for. First-time visitors, resort stays, Ayurveda, water sports

  2. Varkala Beach (Papanasam Beach)

Kerala's most dramatic beach, where red laterite cliffs plunge directly into the sea. The cliff-top promenade is lined with yoga studios, Ayurveda centers, and restaurants. The beach below is considered sacred by Hindus — cremations occasionally take place at the northern end.

Best for. Solo travelers, yoga and Ayurveda retreats, cliff scenery

  3. Cherai Beach

On Vypeen Island 25km from Kochi, Cherai Beach is a paradox — backwaters on one side, Arabian Sea on the other. Dolphins are commonly spotted offshore. Safe swimming, clean sands, and proximity to Kochi make it a great day trip.

Best for. Dolphin spotting, families, day trips from Kochi

  4. Marari Beach

One of Kerala's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches near Mararikulam, fringed by coconut palms and lined with traditional fishing boats. Very limited commercial development preserves its charm. Known for eco-friendly resorts.

Best for. Couples, eco-tourists, Ayurveda, peaceful retreat

  5. Beypore Beach

A historic fishing harbour and beach near Kozhikode, famous for its traditional dhow (Uru) boat building — the same type of wooden vessel used by Arab traders for centuries. The sight of massive wooden boats under construction is extraordinary.

Best for. Cultural tourism, boat-building heritage, fishing village atmosphere

  6. Kappad Beach

A historically significant beach 16km north of Kozhikode where Vasco da Gama first landed in India in 1498. A rocky, unspoiled beach with a small monument marking the landing spot. The nearby ancient mosque and seafood restaurants add to the experience.

Best for. History enthusiasts, quiet beach walks, seafood

  7. Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach

India's longest drive-in beach at 4km, where vehicles are permitted to drive on the hard sand. Located in Kannur district. An unusual and fun experience, especially popular with domestic tourists. The 2km restricted section protects the central stretch for walkers.

Best for. Unique experience, families, road trip stops

  8. Bekal Beach

Adjacent to the impressive Bekal Fort in Kasaragod district — a serene and undeveloped beach with a spectacular backdrop of the centuries-old fort. One of Kerala's most scenic beach-fort combinations.

Best for. Photography, history lovers, uncrowded escape

  9. Poovar Golden Beach

At Kerala's southernmost point, Poovar Island's golden beach is accessible only by boat from Poovar village. The Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea here in a spectacular confluence. Luxury floating cottages make this one of Kerala's most unique beach experiences.

Best for. Romantic getaway, luxury stay, photography

  10. Alleppey Beach

The municipal beach of Alappuzha (Alleppey) town, with a century-old pier extending 137m into the sea. Less known internationally than backwaters but pleasant, with a lighthouse and modest amenities. Good for an early morning walk.

Best for. Morning walks, casual visits, budget travelers in Alleppey

Beach safety

Hard-earned guidance — read this before you swim, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the coast.

Critical

Swim where lifeguards are posted and follow flag warnings — green is safe, yellow is caution, red means no swimming. Rip currents are the leading beach hazard worldwide.

Caution

Watch for tide changes and marine life — jellyfish blooms, sea urchins on rocky entries, occasional shark or stingray advisories. Don’t swim alone, especially at dawn or dusk.

Tip

Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes and after every swim. Take shade between 11 am and 3 pm — the sun is harsher than people expect, even when the air is cool.

Practical

Keep valuables out of sight or back at the accommodation. Beach theft is a small-but-real risk at busy beaches; never leave bags unattended while you’re in the water.
