Delhi Family Travel Guide 2025
Everything families need to know for a successful trip to Delhi with kids.
Delhi, India's sprawling capital territory, is a city where ancient monuments stand beside ultramodern malls and Mughal gardens shadow gleaming corporate towers. As one of the world's most populous cities, Delhi offers an intoxicating blend of history spanning 3,000 years, from Iron Age settlements to British colonial architecture. The city serves as the political, cultural, and commercial heart of India, drawing millions of visitors annually to its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, vibrant street food scene, and legendary bazaars.

Akshardham Temple Children's Section
Beyond the spectacular temple complex, Akshardham offers a boat ride through 10,000 years of Indian history and a large-screen film narrating a child saint's journey. The gardens with musical fountains at dusk are especially memorable. No cameras or phones permitted inside – leave them at cloakroom.

Located in Teen Murti Estate near Chanakyapuri, this state-of-the-art planetarium offers sky shows in English and Hindi with a 15-metre dome. Shows run several times daily. The surrounding Teen Murti House (Nehru's former residence) and gardens are pleasant for a walk before or after the show.

Kid-Friendly Dining
Where to eat with children.
Stick to restaurants that display clear hygiene ratings or are part of established chains when eating with young children – Haldiram's, Sagar Ratna, and hotel restaurants are safest choices for sensitive stomachs.
Delhi street food is delicious but can cause stomach upsets for visitors unaccustomed to local water and cooking conditions. Introduce it gradually, starting with fully cooked items like parathas from Paranthe Wali Gali.
Most mid-range and upmarket restaurants in Delhi are very child-accommodating and will happily prepare plain rice, dal, and mild dishes on request even if not on the menu.
Dilli Haat is one of the best places to introduce children to regional Indian cuisine – each stall represents a different state, making it an educational food experience. Prices are fixed, avoiding haggling stress.
Carry bottled water at all times; only drink sealed mineral water. Popular brands include Bisleri, Kinley, and Aquafina, available at any shop for ₹20–30 (under $0.50).
Fast-food chains (McDonald's, KFC, Domino's) are widespread in all major malls and shopping areas and offer familiar options for children resistant to trying new food.
Many large buffet restaurants offer children under 5 free meals and significant discounts for children aged 5–12 – always ask at reception when booking.
For authentic yet safe South Indian food, Saravana Bhavan (multiple Delhi locations) is a reliable chain with excellent hygiene standards and a menu that most children enjoy – dosas, idlis, and rice dishes are crowd-pleasers.
Family Travel Tips
Make traveling with kids easier.
Visit major outdoor monuments (Red Fort, Qutub Minar, India Gate) in the early morning (8–10AM) to beat both the heat and the crowds; mid-day in summer can exceed 40°C and is exhausting for children.
The Delhi Metro is a lifesaver for families – air-conditioned, clean, affordable, and has dedicated women-and-children coaches. Buy a tourist card for unlimited travel for ₹250/day.
Pre-book popular attractions like Akshardham and National Science Centre online to avoid lengthy ticket queues that can frustrate young children.
Hire a local guide for Old Delhi – navigating Chandni Chowk and its alleys with children can be chaotic without assistance. Many guides charge ₹1,000–1,500 for a half-day and significantly enhance the experience.
Carry a well-stocked first aid kit including oral rehydration salts, antihistamines, and stomach upset remedies. Pharmacies (chemists) are plentiful across Delhi but having basics on hand saves time.
Pollution levels in Delhi can be high, particularly November–January. Check the AQI (Air Quality Index) daily; on high-pollution days (AQI above 200), limit outdoor time and carry masks (N95 recommended for children).
Many monuments have separate queues for foreigners and Indian nationals. Foreigner ticket prices are higher but queues are usually much shorter – a worthwhile trade-off with impatient children.
Delhi malls (Select Citywalk, DLF Promenade, Ambience Mall) provide excellent rainy-day or extreme-heat alternatives with food courts, cinema, gaming arcades, and air conditioning.
Autos (auto-rickshaws) and cycle rickshaws are fun for short distances and children love them; agree on the fare before getting in and use Ola/Uber apps for longer journeys to avoid overcharging.
The city's many parks – Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Deer Park (Hauz Khas) – are free and lovely for a morning run or relaxed picnic. Deer Park actually has spotted deer that children find delightful.
