Mathura & Vrindavan — Krishna's Homeland

2.5-3 hours by roadeasy

Mathura is Lord Krishna's legendary birthplace — one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, and one of India's most important pilgrimage destinations. The adjacent town of Vrindavan (10km) is where Krishna spent his youth and is dotted with over 5,000 temples, including the magnificent Banke Bihari Temple and the ISKCON temple. Mathura is also famous for its peda (milk sweet). Holi festival (March) is celebrated here with legendary intensity — the world's most famous colour festival, particularly the Lathmar Holi at Barsana (42km) where women playfully beat men with bamboo staves.

Tips

  • Lathmar Holi (Barsana, week before Holi) draws huge crowds — book transport weeks ahead.
  • Dress very modestly at all temples (covered shoulders and knees). Leather goods prohibited at some shrines.
  • Mathura peda (milk sweet) makes an excellent souvenir — buy from established shops like Brijwasi Mithai.
