Haridwar & Rishikesh — Ganga Ghats

5-6 hours by roadeasy-moderate

Haridwar is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities — the point where the Ganges exits the Himalayas and enters the plains. The nightly Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri (the most sacred ghat) — hundreds of priests and thousands of pilgrims, oil lamps floating on the river, conch shells and bells — is one of India's most powerful experiences. Rishikesh (24km upstream) is India's yoga capital, with ashrams, meditation centres, and adventure sports (river rafting, bungee jumping). An overnight stay is recommended to experience both the evening Aarti and morning activities.

How to get there

  • {'mode': 'Private car', 'route': 'NH-334B via Meerut and Roorkee', 'duration': '5.5h each way', 'cost_usd': 65, 'cost_inr': 5400, 'notes': 'NH-58 via Meerut is the most direct route. Road condition is good but traffic through Meerut and Roorkee can add 1h.'}
  • {'mode': 'Train', 'service': 'Shatabdi Express (New Delhi to Haridwar)', 'duration': '4.5h each way', 'cost_usd': 7, 'cost_inr': 600, 'notes': 'Departs New Delhi 6:45AM, arrives Haridwar 11:20AM. Last train back ~9PM. Rishikesh is 30min by auto from Haridwar.'}

Tips

  • Leather goods are prohibited in Haridwar's ghats and many temple areas.
  • Evening Ganga Aarti starts 30-45 minutes before sunset — arrive 45 minutes early for a good viewing position.
  • River rafting season is March-June and September-November. Monsoon season (July-August) is dangerous — do not raft.
  • Overnight stay strongly recommended to avoid a 5AM departure from Delhi.
