Day trip from Delhi, Delhi
Alwar — Rajasthan Heritage Town
A rarely-visited Rajasthan heritage city that most Delhi day-trippers bypass in favour of Jaipur. Alwar's rewards include the dramatic Bala Qila fort rising 300 metres above the city on a rocky ridge, the City Palace complex housing an excellent museum of Rajput and Mughal weapons and miniature paintings, and the tranquil Siliserh Lake (13km from city) — a 19th-century artificial lake built as a hunting retreat for the Maharaja of Alwar.
How to get there
- {'mode': 'Train', 'service': 'Multiple trains from Hazrat Nizamuddin or Sarai Rohilla to Alwar Jn', 'duration': '2.5-3h each way', 'cost_usd': 4, 'cost_inr': 330, 'notes': 'Delhi-Jaipur intercity trains stop at Alwar. Check IRCTC for schedule.'}
- {'mode': 'Private car', 'route': 'NH-48 Delhi-Jaipur Highway to Behror, then NH-248 to Alwar', 'duration': '3h each way', 'cost_usd': 45, 'cost_inr': 3700, 'notes': 'Can combine with Neemrana Fort en route (60km before Alwar).'}
Tips
- Alwar is easily combined with a Sariska Tiger Reserve safari — the reserve entrance is 37km from Alwar city.
- The Siliserh Lake Palace (now RTDC Lakend Hotel) has a lakefront restaurant serving reasonable Rajasthani food — good lunch stop.
- Bala Qila requires a permit from the City Police Superintendent's office — arrange on arrival (free, takes 30 minutes).
