Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 on the Kópavogur shoreline just outside Reykjavik, built into the coastline so its infinity-edge geothermal pool appears to spill straight into the North Atlantic. The setting is deliberately dramatic rather than remote: the lagoon is a short drive from downtown Reykjavik, making it Iceland's most accessible large-scale geothermal spa experience. Its signature offering is the seven-step Skjól ritual, which guides visitors through the warm lagoon, a cold-plunge pool, a sauna with ocean views, a cold mist chamber, a sea-salt scrub application, a steam room, and a final rinse. The scrub itself, made with Icelandic sea salts, is the closest the site comes to a named signature treatment, and staff at the ritual stations are trained to guide guests through timing and technique rather than deliver spa treatments in private rooms. Facilities include locker rooms, an in-water swim-up bar, and a restaurant overlooking the lagoon, but there are no private treatment suites; this is a communal wellness circuit rather than a traditional spa menu. Because Sky Lagoon is unticketed for individual ritual steps, booking is by timed general-admission entry rather than treatment-specific reservation, with the Skjól ritual included in the higher admission tiers. It reflects a newer strand of Icelandic bathing culture that pairs the country's geothermal tradition with modern architecture and structured wellness ritual rather than the older, simpler public-pool model.
