Sægreifinn (Sea Baron)

Sægreifinn, known in English as the Sea Baron, is a legendary harbor shack on Geirsgata that has served grilled seafood to locals and visitors for decades from a converted fishing warehouse near the Old Harbour. The signature dish is a rich lobster soup, prepared to a closely guarded recipe and served with fresh bread, alongside skewers of fish, scallops, and other seafood grilled to order at a counter visible from the seating area. The setting is deliberately no-frills, with simple wooden tables, paper napkins, and a working-harbor character that has changed little over the years, and the restaurant has historically operated on a cash-only basis, though this has become more flexible over time. There is no formal dining service; visitors order at the counter and carry their own trays to a table, giving the whole experience a casual, communal feel closer to a market stall than a restaurant. Its reputation, helped by visits from celebrity chefs and international media, has made it one of the most recommended seafood stops in Reykjavík, particularly for a quick, authentic lunch near the harbor.
