Landmannalaugar Highland Day Trip

Landmannalaugar lies about 180 km from Reykjavik in the South Highlands, a roughly three-hour drive via the F208 mountain road that requires a 4WD due to unbridged river crossings; the Reykjavik Excursions or Trex highland bus (around $70 return) is the recommended option for visitors without a 4WD. The area is famed as the most colourful landscape in Iceland, where rhyolite mountains streaked red, yellow, green, and black surround a natural geothermal bathing pool fed by hot springs mixing with a cold glacial stream. Highlights include the Laugahraun lava field, a jagged 1477 eruption flow that can be crossed on marked trails, the Brennisteinsalda crater with its sulphur-streaked slopes, and shorter summit hikes such as Bláhnjúkur offering panoramic views over the highland interior. A typical day trip arrives by highland bus in the late morning, allows time for a soak in the geothermal pool before or after hiking, spends the early afternoon on the Laugahraun and Brennisteinsalda loop (roughly 3-4 hours round trip), and departs on the return bus in the late afternoon. Landmannalaugar is only open from July to September, when the highland roads are clear of snow and the mountain huts are staffed; outside this window the area is inaccessible. Food options are limited to the small shop at the Landmannalaugar mountain hut selling basic snacks and hot drinks, so visitors should pack a lunch for the day, supplemented by a stop at a petrol station café in Hella or Hvolsvöllur on the way.
