Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a full-day trip covering 380 km from Reykjavik, roughly 4.5-5 hours one way along Route 1, doable in a standard 2WD rental car; guided coach tours (around $100-120) and the Reykjavik Excursions day bus also cover the route given its length. At the lagoon, icebergs calved from the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap drift across the tidal lake before washing out to sea and onto the black sand of Diamond Beach across the road, where the ice fragments glitter like scattered diamonds. From May to October, Zodiac boat tours and amphibious boat tours navigate among the icebergs, offering close-up views of seals that haul out on the ice. Given the distance, most visitors treat this as a long single-destination day rather than combining it with other stops; a typical schedule leaves Reykjavik before 7 AM, arrives at the lagoon around midday for a boat tour and time at Diamond Beach, and begins the return drive by mid-afternoon to reach Reykjavik by evening. Some visitors instead break the trip with an overnight stay in Vík or near Skaftafell to shorten the driving on either side. The lagoon is open and photogenic year-round, with winter offering ice cave tours nearby and a chance to see the Northern Lights reflected in the water, while summer allows the boat tours to operate. Food and rest stops include the N1 station in Vík, the Skaftafell visitor centre café in Vatnajökull National Park, and the Jökulsárlón café at the lagoon itself.
