Hvítá River Rafting

Rafting on the Hvítá river takes place near the Golden Circle route in South Iceland, where the glacial river carves through a basalt canyon offering Class II-III rapids suitable for both first-timers and more experienced rafters, depending on the tour selected. Trips launch from a base camp along Route 32, where guides fit participants with wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets before a safety briefing and short drive to the put-in point. The route passes beneath canyon walls and near small geothermal features along the banks, and calmer stretches between rapids give paddlers a chance to look around and, in warmer months, jump into the glacial water for a brief swim. Trips run from May through September when water levels and weather are most manageable, with several daily departures during peak summer. A standard tour lasts about three to five hours including transport, briefing, and the roughly hour-long float on the water itself; the on-river time is shorter but the surrounding logistics extend the full experience. Because the trip start point sits along Route 32 rather than directly on the main Golden Circle loop, many visitors combine it with a stop at Gullfoss and Geysir on the same day, given the proximity of all three sites in the same general area.
