Gullfoss Waterfall

Gullfoss sits on the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland, where the glacial water drops in two stages, first 11 meters then 21 meters, into a 32-meter-deep crevasse before flowing away through a narrow canyon. Visitors reach two main viewpoints: an upper path along the canyon rim with sweeping views of both cascades, and a lower path that leads almost to the edge of the upper drop, where spray drifts constantly across the walkway. On sunny afternoons the spray regularly produces a rainbow arcing over the lower falls. A modern visitor center at the top of the site has a cafe, gift shop, and restrooms, and displays information on Sigríður Tómasdóttir, whose early-20th-century campaign helped stop a hydroelectric dam from being built over the falls. A typical visit takes about an hour, enough time to walk both viewpoints and the connecting path along the canyon. Midday during summer sees the heaviest coach-tour traffic as the second stop on the Golden Circle route; arriving before 9am or after 5pm gives a much quieter experience. In winter, ice builds up along the canyon walls and the lower path is often closed for safety, though the upper viewpoint remains accessible and the frozen spray creates a striking scene of its own.
