Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach lies directly across the Ring Road from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland, where icebergs that break free from the lagoon drift out to sea and wash back onto the shore, stranding on the black volcanic sand as the tide recedes. The ice ranges from small, clear fragments to house-sized chunks, each catching and refracting light differently depending on its density and age, with older, more compressed ice often taking on a distinct blue tint while newer pieces appear clear or white. Because the beach constantly receives new ice and loses pieces that melt or wash back out, the scene changes from visit to visit and even hour to hour, so no two trips look quite the same. The contrast between the pale ice and the jet-black sand is the main draw for photographers, and the low, raking light of golden hour brings out the texture and color within the larger ice blocks particularly well. The beach itself is open and unfenced, with waves periodically reaching further up the sand than expected, so visitors are advised to keep a safe distance from the waterline. A visit to walk the beach and photograph the ice takes about 30-60 minutes and pairs naturally with a stop at Jökulsárlón on the opposite side of the road.
