Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón sits along the Ring Road in southeast Iceland, where Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of the larger Vatnajökull ice cap, calves icebergs directly into a lagoon roughly 248 meters deep, Iceland's deepest lake. Chunks of ice ranging from small fragments to house-sized bergs drift slowly across the water toward a narrow channel that empties into the Atlantic, and harbor seals are frequently seen resting on the ice or swimming among the floes. A network of viewing platforms and a walkway along the shore give unobstructed views without a tour, while amphibious boat tours and, in season, zodiac boats travel out among the icebergs for a closer look. Just across the road, Diamond Beach is where stranded ice chunks wash up and sit on black volcanic sand, creating a striking contrast that photographs well in any weather. A basic visit to the shoreline and Diamond Beach takes about an hour; adding a boat tour extends this to two or three hours. The lagoon has grown substantially over recent decades as the glacier retreats, and its size and ice content change with the seasons, with the most dramatic icebergs typically visible in late summer and autumn. The site sees a steady stream of visitors year-round since it lies directly on the Ring Road, but the shoreline is long enough that quieter spots are easy to find away from the main parking area.
