Greece offers a captivating blend of ancient history, stunning islands, and Mediterranean culture. From the iconic Acropolis in Athens to the whitewashed villages of Santorini, this sun-soaked destination combines archaeological wonders with pristine beaches and world-class cuisine.
Greece enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The country spans several climate zones: Athens and the Aegean islands have the archetypal dry summer (June-September virtually rain-free), while northern Greece and the Ionian islands receive more winter rainfall. Summer temperatures regularly reach 35-40C on the mainland and islands, with the Meltemi north wind moderating heat on the Aegean islands from July-August. Winters are mild in the south (Athens rarely below 5C) but northern mountains receive significant snowfall.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: March-May
The best season for culture and hiking. Wildflowers cover the hillsides, ancient sites are uncrowded, temperatures are pleasant (15-22C), and the famous Samaria Gorge opens in late April. Greek Easter (date varies) is the country's greatest celebration.
Summer
Months: June-August
Peak season with long days, hot sun (30-38C), and the full tourist operation running on all islands. Santorini and Mykonos are at their most vibrant and expensive. The Meltemi wind cools the Cyclades from July onwards but can disrupt ferry services.
Fall
Months: September-November
September and October are arguably the finest months in Greece: warm sea temperatures (still 23-25C), thinner crowds, lower prices, and some of the year's most beautiful light. November brings increasing rainfall and island businesses begin to close.
Winter
Months: December-February
The Aegean islands largely shut down (especially Mykonos, Santorini, smaller Cyclades). Athens remains lively and excellent for culture without crowds. Northern mountains have good skiing. Crete and Rhodes remain warmer and partially open.
