Climate Overview

Greece enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The country spans several climate zones: Athens and the Aegean islands have the archetypal dry summer (June-September virtually rain-free), while northern Greece and the Ionian islands receive more winter rainfall. Summer temperatures regularly reach 35-40C on the mainland and islands, with the Meltemi north wind moderating heat on the Aegean islands from July-August. Winters are mild in the south (Athens rarely below 5C) but northern mountains receive significant snowfall.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

March-May

The best season for culture and hiking. Wildflowers cover the hillsides, ancient sites are uncrowded, temperatures are pleasant (15-22C), and the famous Samaria Gorge opens in late April. Greek Easter (date varies) is the country's greatest celebration.

Tips: Pack layers for cool evenings and occasional rain. Book Easter accommodation months ahead if planning to experience traditional celebrations.

☀️ Summer

June-August

Peak season with long days, hot sun (30-38C), and the full tourist operation running on all islands. Santorini and Mykonos are at their most vibrant and expensive. The Meltemi wind cools the Cyclades from July onwards but can disrupt ferry services.

Tips: Start sightseeing early (8AM) before heat peaks. Book everything in advance. Carry water constantly. Midday rest during the 2-4PM heat is culturally normal and practically necessary.

🍂 Fall

September-November

September and October are arguably the finest months in Greece: warm sea temperatures (still 23-25C), thinner crowds, lower prices, and some of the year's most beautiful light. November brings increasing rainfall and island businesses begin to close.

Tips: September is the sweet spot - summer warmth without July-August intensity. Pack a light jacket for evenings from October.

❄️ Winter

December-February

The Aegean islands largely shut down (especially Mykonos, Santorini, smaller Cyclades). Athens remains lively and excellent for culture without crowds. Northern mountains have good skiing. Crete and Rhodes remain warmer and partially open.

Tips: Winter in Athens offers Acropolis without queues, restaurant bargains, and authentic local life. Ski resorts at Parnassos and Kaimaktsalan operate December-March.
