Kiki's Tavern

Kiki's Tavern on Agios Sostis Beach on Mykonos has built an outsized reputation through the combination of a remote location, a deliberately anti-commercial stance, and genuinely excellent grilled meat. The restaurant has no electricity—the kitchen operates on charcoal and gas only—which means no refrigeration beyond ice boxes and a menu that changes entirely based on what was bought that morning at the butcher. Lamb chops are the centrepiece: thick cuts grilled over intense charcoal heat until charred outside and pink within, served without formality on basic tables that face directly onto the sand. Greek salad, fresh bread, and a simple wine list complete the offer. The no-reservation policy combined with the remote beach location creates predictable queues: visitors drive or take a boat taxi to Agios Sostis, join a handwritten list managed by the staff, and wait in the beach bar across the road for their name to be called. Waits of thirty minutes to over an hour are common in July and August. Payment is cash only without exception, and the restaurant closes at 6 PM having operated only for lunch. The experience is deliberately confrontational to modern convenience culture, and its popularity reflects both the quality of the cooking and the particular pleasure of a meal that requires genuine effort to obtain. Kiki's is closed from October to April.
