The ascent of Mount Pantokrator (906m), Corfu's highest peak, from the mountain village of Spartilas. Spartilas is a traditional mountain village on the northeastern slopes of Pantokrator, roughly 25 kilometres from Corfu Town, accessible by the island's rural bus network or by hire car. The walk begins from the village square and initially follows the Corfu Trail waymarks northward through dense oak and olive woodland, gaining elevation steadily through switchbacks on ancient shepherd's paths.

After approximately 3 kilometres the trail passes through Old Perithia — one of the best-preserved Byzantine-era villages in the Ionian Islands, abandoned in the early 20th century when residents moved to the coast. The stone houses, churches, and cobbled alleys of this ghost village remain largely intact and are well worth exploring; a seasonal taverna here makes a useful rest stop.

Above Old Perithia the trail continues on a jeep track to the summit ridge. The final stretch involves some rocky exposed walking with views extending northward toward Albania and east toward mainland Greece on clear days. The summit is marked by the whitewashed Pantokrator Monastery (usually locked) and telecommunications towers. Note that a paved road from Strinilas also reaches the summit by vehicle, so the peak is not a wilderness destination — early starts maximize clear views before afternoon cloud builds.

Frequently asked questions

Is Old Perithia accessible by foot only?

Old Perithia can also be reached by vehicle on the road from Episkepsi village. Walking from Spartilas is the most rewarding approach, passing through the ghost village naturally en route to the summit.

Can the summit be reached by car?

Yes. A paved road approaches the summit from Strinilas village on the northern side. The upper section is open to vehicles, so the peak is not car-free. Walking from Spartilas provides the best experience of the mountain.

Is the Pantokrator Monastery open to visitors?

The monastery church is occasionally open but is usually locked. The exterior and the summit viewpoint are always accessible. Modest dress is appropriate if the church is open.
