Halikounas Beach is a long beach of golden sand and protected dunes at the southern end of the Korission lagoon, near Lefkimmi in the south-west of Corfu, Greece, about 38 km from Corfu Town. It is one of the more natural beaches on the island, with a broad, gently sloping shore, high dunes behind and the calm lagoon beyond, and a quieter character than the main resorts. The water is clear and a light blue, and the shallows extend a fair distance, which makes it comfortable for paddling and swimming, although the open south-west exposure brings wind and some swell, particularly in the afternoon. The surrounding dunes and lagoon form a protected habitat, and visitors are asked to keep to existing paths and avoid damaging the vegetation. Birdwatchers can see waders and other species around the lagoon in suitable seasons. Facilities are limited by design. A beach tavern provides food and drinks, there is parking beside the beach, and some umbrellas and loungers are available, but there is no large resort infrastructure. Visitors should bring water, sun protection and, ideally, their own shade, because the beach is open and exposed. Lifeguard cover is not guaranteed. The atmosphere is calm, spacious and informal, appealing to couples, walkers and visitors who prefer open space to organised sunbed rows. Access is by road, and a rental car is the most practical way to arrive, about 55 minutes from Corfu Town, as public transport is very limited. The approach from the parking area to the sand is short. The best season is June to September. Mornings are calm and quiet, afternoon wind increases, and late afternoon offers warm light across the dunes. Nearby Issos Beach, to the north along the same lagoon coast, is better known for wind sports and has a similar dune landscape.
