Angelokastro is a Byzantine fortress on the northwest coast of Corfu, Greece, perched on the summit of a steep cliff roughly 300 metres above the sea, north of Paleokastritsa near the village of Krini. It dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and was strengthened by the Despotate of Epirus and later the Venetians. The fortress served as a refuge for local villagers during raids and was never captured in the Ottoman sieges, which helped build its reputation as the island's most formidable stronghold. It stands on the natural rock of a promontory with sheer drops on three sides, and its walls follow the cliff edge. Visitors reach it from Krini by parking and walking about 15 to 20 minutes along a path, which becomes steep and uneven in the final stretch, with rough steps cut into the rock. At the top they pass through gateways and see the remains of cisterns, a small church dedicated to Archangel Michael, rock-cut chambers and ruined bastions. The view from the summit is one of the best on the island, taking in the coast of Paleokastritsa, the headlands and bays, and out to sea towards the Diapontia Islands on clear days. This makes the site a favourite for photographs, particularly from the upper terrace and from the walls overlooking the sheer drop. A visit takes between one and 1.5 hours including the walk. Mornings and late afternoons are best, as the exposed rock is hot in midday summer and the light is softer. Crowds are modest, with the busiest hour arriving in mid-morning when tour groups come from Paleokastritsa. Reported opening hours run from about 10:00 to 17:00 or 18:00 in summer, and admission is around €3, though visitors should verify locally. Sturdy shoes are essential, and the site has few railings, so children need supervision near the edges. Angelokastro is about 30 km from Corfu Town and is usually reached by car.
