Terpsis

Terpsis is a fashionable wine bar and modern Mediterranean restaurant at Dedalou 19 in central Heraklion, occupying a well-designed space on one of the city's main pedestrian streets. The name derives from the Greek word for 'delight' or 'pleasure', and the restaurant delivers on it in a context that is less about traditional Cretan taverna cooking and more about the Cretan wine and food culture experienced through a contemporary, urban lens. Terpsis fills a gap in the Heraklion food scene by combining a serious and thoughtful wine programme with a menu of sharing plates, cheese boards, and modern small dishes — a format that suits the way younger Heraklion professionals and culturally engaged visitors like to eat and drink. The wine list is the central focus: Cretan wines by the glass are rotated regularly and cover the island's principal appellations (Peza, Dafnes, Archanes, Sitia, Kissamos) as well as some of the smaller, emerging producers who are beginning to attract attention beyond the island. The cheese and cured meat board — featuring aged graviera, fresh anthotyros, local loukaniko, and Cretan prosciutto-style meats alongside fig preserve and honey — is the quintessential order and can serve as the foundation of an entire meal. Dakos bruschetta, aged graviera with thyme honey, and small modern plates round out the food offering. The atmosphere is buzzy and social from around 18:00 onwards, when Heraklion's after-work crowd begins to fill the space. The music level is moderate — audible but not overwhelming, supporting conversation. The restaurant operates daily from 17:00 to 02:00. Reservations at weekends are advisable. Average spend is around €28 per person.
