Sunset Taverna Falassarna

Sunset Taverna Falassarna is a classic Greek beach taverna at Falassarna Beach on the remote western tip of Crete, in the Kissamos regional unit of Chania prefecture. Falassarna is consistently ranked among the finest beaches in Greece — a sweeping arc of pink-tinged sand facing due west into the open sea, with nothing between Crete and the setting sun. The taverna's name is self-explanatory and entirely accurate: the west-facing orientation makes Falassarna the best sunset-watching beach in Crete, and the taverna fills every evening from local families, campers, and tourists who have made the journey specifically to witness what many describe as one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Mediterranean. The food is straightforward and honest: fresh grilled fish of the day (typically sea bream, sea bass, or whatever the local boats brought in), Greek salads with local barrel-aged feta, fresh octopus grilled or fried, mezedes, and cold drinks. Cooking is simple and relies on ingredient quality rather than kitchen complexity — the fresh fish, Cretan olive oil, and ripe summer tomatoes do most of the work. Tables are set close to the sand, and the sound of the sea accompanies every meal. During the day the taverna functions as a beach bar serving cold drinks, salads, and snacks; from early evening it transitions fully into restaurant mode. Operations run from May to October. No reservations are taken; arriving before 18:00 is the key to securing a table with the unobstructed western sea view for sunset. Average spend is around €20 per person. The drive to Falassarna from Chania (approximately 55 kilometres on the coastal and mountain road) is an experience in itself.
