Stoa is a stylish café and all-day dining spot at Arkadiou 2 in Rethymno, occupying a bright 19th-century neoclassical building on the city's main commercial shopping street. Arkadiou is Rethymno's principal pedestrian thoroughfare — lined with shops, cafés, and the elegant neoclassical and Venetian architecture that distinguishes the city from other Cretan centres. Stoa's building is one of the handsomest on the street, with high ceilings, large windows, and a quality of light that makes the interior particularly pleasant for a morning sitting. The café is popular with Rethymno's university community — the University of Crete has a significant presence in the city — as well as with visitors beginning or ending a day in the old town. The coffee programme is well-executed: freddo cappuccino (the creamy Greek cold coffee preparation) is a particular strength, and the espresso base is of consistently good quality. The food menu covers light brunch dishes and pastry: loukoumades (Greek honey doughnuts) dusted with sesame and drizzled with honey are made fresh and served warm, representing the best version of this street-food classic in a sit-down café format. Fresh croissants, a miniature dakos preparation using the Cretan barley rusk format, and seasonal pastries complete the offering. Stoa operates throughout the day from 08:00 to 22:00, making it one of the more flexible cafés in Rethymno — useful for both an early breakfast and a pre-dinner coffee or light aperitivo.
