Paradisos

Paradisos is a traditional Cretan grill taverna in Plakias village on the south coast of Rethymno prefecture, serving the kind of straightforward, generous food that has sustained Cretan families for generations. Plakias is a low-key coastal village on one of Crete's finest south-coast beaches, popular with independent travellers, hikers finishing the Samaria Gorge route, and those seeking a quieter alternative to the north coast resorts. Paradisos sits in the heart of the village and functions as the kind of local taverna that communities like Plakias depend on — a place where regulars eat several times a week and visitors discover the gap between tourist-oriented food and what Cretans actually eat. The grill is the centre of the kitchen: on weekends a whole lamb is turned on the spit outdoors, filling the village air with the aroma of wood-fire roasting and drawing a crowd by midday. The lamb is seasoned simply with Cretan herbs, lemon, and olive oil, and is eaten with country bread, village salad, and barrel wine — a meal that requires no elaboration.
