Diporto is an old-school Cretan grill house near the 1866 Market in central Heraklion — one of those thoroughly local institutions that visitors rarely discover without a recommendation and that, once found, become a highlight of the trip. The name refers to the two-door design of the original premises; the format is entirely counter-service, meaning diners approach a counter of trays and choose what looks good, take a seat at a basic table, and eat. There is no menu in the conventional sense — the day's offering is whatever was cooked that morning from the freshest available ingredients. The cooking style is pure Cretan grill and roast: lamb chops (paidakia) cooked over charcoal develop a char that the simple accompaniments of lemon, olive oil, and sea salt do nothing to obscure. Loukaniko sausage — the Cretan pork sausage flavoured with orange rind and allspice — grills beautifully and is always worth ordering when present. Horiatiki (village salad) made with large chunks of Cretan tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, Kalamata olives, and a thick slab of local feta is definitive. Retsina wine served cold by the glass or small pitcher is the correct drink pairing. The atmosphere is completely utilitarian and entirely the point: plastic chairs, worn Formica tables, no music, the clatter of the kitchen, and conversations in Greek around you. Diporto attracts the traders and workers from the 1866 Market, civil servants from nearby offices, and the occasional adventurous visitor. It opens Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 16:00. Average spend is around €10–12 per person for a very satisfying lunch.
