Barko

Barko is a waterfront café and breakfast spot at Akti Koundourou 14 in Agios Nikolaos, positioned on the harbour road that wraps around the distinctive Lake Voulismeni — the deep, almost perfectly circular saltwater lake connected to the sea by a narrow channel that is the most characteristic feature of Agios Nikolaos and one of the most unusual natural formations of any Greek town. The café looks directly across the glittering water of the lake and harbour, with views extending to the hillsides beyond — a setting that makes even a simple Greek coffee feel like an event. Barko functions primarily as a morning café and all-day drinks stop, popular with visitors beginning a day in Agios Nikolaos before a boat trip to Spinalonga Island or a drive into the eastern Cretan hinterland. Greek yoghurt served with locally produced Cretan honey and crushed walnuts is the recommended breakfast order — the yoghurt here is thick and full-flavoured, typical of the best Cretan dairy. Fresh fruit plates with seasonal Cretan produce and bougatsa slices from a local bakery supply the alternatives. Greek coffee (ellinikos) made traditionally in a small copper briki, and freddo espresso for iced coffee drinkers, are the standard morning drinks. The café operates from 07:30 through to late in the evening (approximately 23:00), making it useful as both a breakfast spot and an early evening drinks venue for watching the lake light change. No reservations are needed. Average spend is around €8 per person for breakfast including coffee. Agios Nikolaos is the main town of Lasithi prefecture in eastern Crete, and Barko sits in the most scenic part of the town's lakeside promenade.
